The Road to DogCon - Part 1 - The Ogre Mound

A new year means a new tournament season. And luckily for us New South Welshmen, tournament season comes around in the early part of the year.

The first main event will be DogCon, which will be held on the first weekend of February.

I decided to tweak some units in the Greenskin army to try and add more infantry. There is no comp score for DogCon, so I can expect to see some tough lists.

Richard has been dying to get a game against my Greenskins for quite some time, so I thought I'd pit up Razghull Skullsplitta against the Ogres for their first trial match.

We rolled up Dawn Attack for the scenario, which meant random deployment. Funny enough, one of my tweaks was to add in 3 single trolls, so I was weary about one, two or all of the trolls being deployed on the opposite side of where Razghull would be. One troll ended up being placed on the other end, while the other was a fair distance away, but could easily move my Warboss and BSB close enough for that troll to pass some Stupidity tests in the early phases.

I rolled a 6 at the start of the game, allowing me to steal the initiative and decide who would go first. I decided I would get first dibs to see if I could do some damage early.

Turns out I couldn't even do that properly. Razghull, Bruticus (The BSB) and Da Ruff Necks (Big Uns) squabbled early and couldn't advance to where I wanted them. I rolled a 3 for Winds of Magic and couldn't even cast a basic 9+ spell with those 3 dice and failed to do anything with 2 Doom Divers.

Maybe I should've passed up on first turn afterall...

Things were looking shakey when Richard took a big lead early. I lost the Da Black Choppaz (Black Orcs) when they charged a unit of Gnoblars on the flank. An overrun would've smacked them on the flank of the Mournfang Cav which had overrun themselves into Razghull and Da Ruff Necks. Their armour must be too heavy these days as they failed to run down the Gnoblars and also failed to reach the Mournfang.

I did have a contingency plan in place as I had set up a single Troll (which had only 1 wound left as result of the Leadbelchers) as a speed bump in front of his Irongut unit, which was also a bunker for his Slaughtermaster and Bruiser BSB.

The Squig Herd also charge the big unit of Ogre Bulls, While doing some serious damage to the Bulls, they did their own smacking their own. I did lose combat so the Squigs exploded. Unfortunately, I rolled high enough that the single Troll parked in front of the Ironguts would be hit. With only one wound left, I was hoping I could roll low for the amount of hits...

Nope. 4 wounds and couldn't save any with the regen.

That left the Ironguts with a free rear charge onto the Black Orcs. *Sigh* It happens...

A few pics later, the Mournfang Cav routed, but I couldn't catch them. It actually took me all game long to get the points for them. I made a simple mistake of not Making Way with Bruticus to smack the last Mournfang Cav model into submission. In my defense, I thought Razghull and a few of his mates would seal the deal, but apparently not.

Da Stone Choppaz (Savage Orcs) failed their animosity test and had to charge the Ironguts. Some careful dice management and some good dice rolls (and some bad dice from Richard) in the magic phase allowed me to cast every spell on my Turn. That pretty much sealed the fate of the Ironguts. I killed the Bruiser outright and whittled down the Ironguts. The Slaughtermaster had the Crown of Command, so it wasn't going to be easy. But with the BSB gone, one bad roll on a Break Test was all I needed to finally get rid of the Slaughtermaster.

Da Stone Choppaz ran into the flank of the Leadbelchers, then got counter charged by the Bulls on the flank. While I lasted 2 turns, Da Stone Choppaz could only take so much beating and eventually broke.

At this point, Richard was up on points until I finally killed off the last Mournfang. Killing Mournfangs are not an easy task and would actually be really scared if I had to face 2 or 3 units of them.

I must say it was a tight battle. Plenty of dead models from both sides. In the end, the difference was only 196 points. A minor victory to Razghull, which would've given me an 11-9 win based on DogCon's scoring system.

Looking forward to the next game...
