DogCon updated list

With a couple of practice games this week, this is the army list I'm intending to take to DogCon.

I'm not sure if adding an additional 4 Black Orcs to what I normally run will help. I'm thinking of dropping them for another single Troll or a Wolf Chariot. Of course that means I will have to drop something else along with the 4 Black Orcs to get a 50 point Wolf Chariot. But we'll see how we go with the rest of the practice games.

Road 2 DogCon - Part 3 - Realm of Knights

Wondering out the forests of Athel Loren, Razghull and his merry band of Greenskins encounter an army of Bretonnian Knights.

I travelled to Games Workshop Castle Hill to set up a game against a person I've never met before. Originally, I was supposed to play some dude named Andreas, but ended up being pitched up against a friendly fellow named Phil.

We rolled up another simple Battleline scenario with me winning the right to deploy first.

Not everyday I come up against a Bretonnian player. I assumed he would have some Trebuchets at hand, so I wanted to keep my non-ItP units together in case they would get smashed by them.

When Phil started putting some models on the table, I noticed that he didn't have any Trebuchets. He opted for a unit of 8 Grail Knights instead. Major morale booster for me.

Phil was keen to get into combat on the left side of the battlefield, attempting to charge on his first turn. Seeing how committed he was, I decided to push my Mangler Squigs on the right side towards his Grail Knights and Knights with Prophetess. My Savage Orcs did cop a Dwellers Below from his Prophetess, which also miscast. Almost half the unit was wiped out, luckily, my Savage Orc Great Shaman passed his Toughness test. The miscast took out a couple of Knights in return.

I started planting my Troll diverters for him to charge with his Men-At-Arms, Knights with BSB and Pegasus Knights. He decided to charge my Squig Herd with his Men-At-Arms. I quickly started salivating at that combat.

On the right, his Grail Knights and Knight unit charged the Savage Orcs. The Grail Knights, just missed one of my Mangler Squigs, however, the Prophetess' unit had to charge through the other. Being wittled down by a Mangler Squig and 2 Doom Divers, there was little left of that Knight unit. After charging through the Mangler, I managed to kill the Prophetess and the unit, leaving just the Grail Knights to charge the Savage Orcs.

Things were looking great on the left side. The Trolls were quickly dispatched by the Pegasus Knights and the large block of Knights. Unfortunately for Phil, he couldn't overrun anymore with his Knight/BSB bus because his Men-At-Arms were in the way.

His Men-At-Arms did manage to kill a few Squigs, but with the same Initiative, it meant any dead Squigs were going to have a swing back. In the end, I killed more than he did, winning combat res by 5. The majority of his Men-At-Arms were in the forest, meaning they weren't Steadfast. So they fled and decided not to pursue. This left an open space between my Squig Herd and Big Uns to charge his Knight/BSB bus.

Good times.

The Grail Knights and Lord eventually broke the Savage Orc Great Shaman when I lost my Steadfast.

I combo charged the Big Uns and Squig herd into the Knight/BSB bus, while also declaring my Waaagh! He decided to issue a challenge with his BSB and I happily accepted with my Warboss. I wounded him once, while the Brettonian BSB failed to do anything. I broke the unit, however, failed to catch them. As long as the BSB was gone, I can live with not catching them.

The Big Uns pursued and smacked into the Pegasus Knights, which were easily dispatched in the following round of combat.

During his turn, he failed to kill the last remaining Mangler Squig with quite a huge volley from the Archer units. That's one tough Mangler Squig!

The Men-At-Arms rallied, but I just charged them again on my following turn. He killed a lot more Squigs this time around, but I still managed to kill more. I also decided to direct some attacks on the Level 2 Damsel, killing her with ease. I won combat again, but the Men-At-Arms were Steadfast. Phil was unlucky to roll a 9 for the leadership test and with his BSB gone, it meant they were running. I decided not to pursue and just well, as the remaining Men-At-Arms fled off the table.

The Black Orcs which were hiding behind impassable terrain throughout the whole game finally made their way towards the Grail Knight unit and Lord. I targeted the unit with some Doom Diver fire, caused 3 wounds on his last 2 rank and file units. He saved all 3 wounds on the ward save. Ugghhh...

Then I decided to pepper them with some arrow fire from the Night Goblins and somehow managed to kill the last 2 Grail Knights!

With just his Lord and 2 units of Peasant Archers left on the table after Turn 4, Phil decided to concede.

Razghull and his Greenskin horde scored another 18-2 massacre win. Great run so far!

WIP Projects

Just though I'd share another terrain piece I finished just yesterday.

It's a but different from the other Watchtower which I painted. I went with brown on the stones and grey for the wall itself. I didn't spend as much time on the detail as I knew I would be donating this piece to the Club.

Next is a couple of pictures of my WIP Mangler Squigs.

I figured I'd separate the models into two as I really don't feel like spending another $96 on another model.

The Mangler squig model itself is not that bad. It's just unforunate it's in Finecast - something I'm not a fan of.

As the model itself, one of the Squigs is standing on top of another, so splitting them into two might get some dirty looks from players when Line of Sight issues come up.

So to eliminate that issue, I've made both Squigs standing on top of a terrain piece. The first is a set of stairs (as above). The second model, I've used some left over cork pieces to make it look like some rocky terrain (below).

I'm looking to do more work on the gaps with the Liquid Green Stuff and maybe add some more details on the base or terrain.

The Road to DogCon - Part 2 - Wrong Turn

Razghull Skullsplitta had a choice to make.

Take a detour into the Wood Elf realm of Athel Loren, or creep deeper towards The Ogre Kingdoms in search of more Ogre villages to plunder. Grutongue, more affectionately known as 'Da Joker' amongst all Goblins had advised that his Night Goblin comrades needed Razghull's Orcs to bully some elf folk into submission. In return for his help, Da Joker would gladly lead his 'krew with pointy sticks' and aid Razghull in any of his future battles. Da Joker, cunning as ever, also let Razghull know that if he had lost any battle against the elf folk, Razghull would be able to eat him for dinner and called it a "win-win situation".

How Could Razghull refuse?

Upon their search for the elf folk, Da Joker had given one of Razghull's Big Boss' a map of Athel Loren. He had specifically told him to read it in a strict order. Unfortunately, the Big Boss had read the map upside down and ended up leading Razghull's Greenskin horde into an abandoned Empire hold - currently being raided by Gorthek and his herd of Beastmen...

I let Peter roll which scenario we would be playing and ended up with Battle Line.

Only had the one Mangler Squig and cut down on my single Trolls, so I had less deployment drops in this game. Even with the two units that ambushed, I still had the +1 to see who would go first. I won that roll, but decided to give first turn to Peter.

With the Shard of the Herdstone, Peter was packing 12 power dice on the first two turns of the game. Luckily, most of his spells are buffs and hexes. The only damage spells he had in his deck was Pit of Shades. Also, all his Shamans were level 2, which meant that he wasn't getting the +4 to cast, which was huge.

After failing to draw out the Dispel Scroll on turn 1 with Foot of Gork, 'Eadbang Da Shaman did what he's known for by casting 'Eadbutt on the Beastman BSB and wounded him!

Peter took a massive lead in the early stages of this game as well.

He failed to control his Frenzied Doombull into charging my Savage Orc unit with 'Eadbang (the level 4 Savage Orc Great Shaman). He won combat after I fluffed most of my ward saves. Sure I was stubborn at leadership 8, but I rolled a 9 and they fled off the table. Poor deployment choice on my part, but he totally fluked the charge and didn't count on his Doombull making the long charge in the first place.

So my 'Eadbang (my level 4) and the Savage Orcs were gone on his Turn 2. Eek. Uphill battle up ahead...

From here on in, Peter's luck just went sour. Of course, I had to actually use some tactics and started to get picky with the combats. I knew I couldn't hide the Night Goblin Archers at the back anymore and actually had to use them in combat if I wanted to avoid getting overrun by the Beastmen.

Peter started charging my units left, right and centre. The massive unit of Gors with the BSB made their charge against the Black Orcs. The Bestigors in the middle charged the Troll, which I had set up just in front of the Big Uns. The other Bestigor unit also declared a charge, this time against the Night Goblin Archers. A stand and shoot knocked off about 3 Bestigors, but it was the Fanatics who wiped out most of them, who knocked off about 11 of the Bestigor brutes. He still managed to pass a Panic check. Not what I was after, but he only had 6 Bestigors left when they met the 40 Night Goblins, led by Da Joker Goblin.

His General along with his Bestigor friends, easily smashed the single Troll aside, overunning into the Big Uns unit. I was feeling good about this one. But this combat would have to be fought out in the next round.

The one I wasn't feeling too confident about was the BSB and his Gor horde against the Black Orcs. I went with the Choppa/Shield combo. And I must say, this combo changed the outlook of the game.

He managed to wound 14 Black Orcs. Their heavy armour/shield knocked off 7 wounds. Then I parried 3, resulting in only 4 dead Black Orcs. They are tough as nails. When it came to swiping back, I targeted his BSB, which was on one wound left. Two Black Orcs took a swipe at him, wounding him once, but Peter failed the armour save. Dead Beastman BSB. Major morale booster for me as this meant one bad roll on his Primal Fury would take away his re-rolls to hit every round of combat.

After seeing that Beastman BSB die must've inspired the rest of the Black Orc regiment as they continued to fell more savage Gors. So much so, that it ended up drawing the combat after I had no hope of the Black Orcs surviving.

Next round, Razghull, Bruticus and Da Ruff Necks, preceeded to lay the smack down on his Bestigors, breaking them in combat and overunning into the Gor unit which was combat with the Black Orcs.

Slowly started to get some confidence back, especially when the Black Orcs started to ward off more Gor attacks with their armour and parries. Once again, the Big Uns laid more smack down and helped the Black Orcs break the Gor unit. Razghull and his unit were spent and couldn't overrun anymore, instead, reforming to meet the incoming charge from his Doombull. Meanwhile, the Black Orcs were madly chasing down the Gors, which they eventually did.

So in went his Doombull, quick to challenge an eager opponent. Still quite cranky that Razghull was lead into a wrong turn, he quickly dragged the Orc Big Boss who read the map incorrectly as a sacrifice. The Big Boss was appropriately slain. With the combat res, the Big Uns just managed to win based on the musician, unfortunately, the Doombull stuck around.

I managed to break the Doombull eventually and even ran it down with the Da Ruff Necks.

I don't think I could've played it any better than that. I had lost my level 4 Savage Orc Shaman and 35 Savage Orcs before my Turn 2. From then on, I had only lost another Doom Diver, Troll and the Mangler Squig.

It was an 18-2 win to Razghull and his horde. Quite happy with that!

Project Skullvane Manse

Turning 30 was never going to be an easy thing. I had to accept that I was no longer in my 20's. I couldn't come up to workmates and tell them "I'm still on the right side of 30" when it came to age jokes. And I certainly had to cop more "you're an old fart" jokes from younger mates.

Luckily my missus helped me overcome such a dire mindset by showering me with presents. Not just a great "Dirty 30" party with the family but also a High Elf army (that's currently being assembled) and something I've wanted since I first laid eyes on it (no, not Jennifer Hawkins) - Skullvane Manse.

Usually, I'm pretty anal about gaps, filing mould lines down, etc, but I just couldn't wait to get painting this wonderful kit. I went with the Astromancer telescope over the barricaded walls for the top part. I did however, decided to change the layout of the catwalk by not adding the stairs (see below).

Instead, I added the extra wooden parts as a platform for the 2 doors. I just thought I would go with something different.

I still used a fair bit of Liquid Green Stuff over the major gaps. These were really prominent in the rocky areas near the bottom of the model. There were also some gaps near the side of the tower (just below the tiles) but I set my focus mostly on the stone.

The technique I found best was to just paste the gaps with Liquid Green Stuff. Let it settle overnight as it does take some time to dry. Once it's dry, file it down with a fine hobby file. It was pretty easy to do on the stone parts. Once you get to filing down other parts, like stones to make up buildings, the process will definitely be a lot trickier.

Once I was happy with the gaps, it was time for the most exciting part - painting!

I started off with drybrushing all the stone parts with Codex Grey. I followed it up with a second layer of drybrushing with Fortress Grey.

Up next were all the wooden parts which was painted with Bestial Brown. I wasn't worried about the paint getting into the recesses as I would be giving these areas a liberal wash of Devlan Mud.

With the astromancer telescope, I used Brazen Brass. Now, when I ran out of this colour, I quickly ducked down to Games Workshop and was told that Brazen Brass had been out of production for almost 6 years. Yikes! Was this tub of paint really that old?

Anyway, I looked for the closest matching colour and found it in Dwarf Bronze.

After basecoating the telescope, I went with a wash of Asurmen Blue.

Took awhile to dry, but with the following step, I watered down some Dwarf Bronze mixed with a bit of Tin Bitz and gave it a highlight. I gave a second highlight in certain areas, especially near the top of the dome and telescope.

With the dirt on the stone, it was a matter of just stipling on a bit of Scorched Brown and Graveyard Earth.

With the roof tiles, I used Scaly Green and made sure I covered the entire area.

This was then following by a wash of Devlan Mud. When the wash dried, I went over some areas with Devlan Mud again so some would be darker than others.

Coming up with the latter stages, I worked on the finer details, such as the skulls, the doors and sigils.

And with that, I give you a finished version of Skullvane Manse.

The Road to DogCon - Part 1 - The Ogre Mound

A new year means a new tournament season. And luckily for us New South Welshmen, tournament season comes around in the early part of the year.

The first main event will be DogCon, which will be held on the first weekend of February.

I decided to tweak some units in the Greenskin army to try and add more infantry. There is no comp score for DogCon, so I can expect to see some tough lists.

Richard has been dying to get a game against my Greenskins for quite some time, so I thought I'd pit up Razghull Skullsplitta against the Ogres for their first trial match.

We rolled up Dawn Attack for the scenario, which meant random deployment. Funny enough, one of my tweaks was to add in 3 single trolls, so I was weary about one, two or all of the trolls being deployed on the opposite side of where Razghull would be. One troll ended up being placed on the other end, while the other was a fair distance away, but could easily move my Warboss and BSB close enough for that troll to pass some Stupidity tests in the early phases.

I rolled a 6 at the start of the game, allowing me to steal the initiative and decide who would go first. I decided I would get first dibs to see if I could do some damage early.

Turns out I couldn't even do that properly. Razghull, Bruticus (The BSB) and Da Ruff Necks (Big Uns) squabbled early and couldn't advance to where I wanted them. I rolled a 3 for Winds of Magic and couldn't even cast a basic 9+ spell with those 3 dice and failed to do anything with 2 Doom Divers.

Maybe I should've passed up on first turn afterall...

Things were looking shakey when Richard took a big lead early. I lost the Da Black Choppaz (Black Orcs) when they charged a unit of Gnoblars on the flank. An overrun would've smacked them on the flank of the Mournfang Cav which had overrun themselves into Razghull and Da Ruff Necks. Their armour must be too heavy these days as they failed to run down the Gnoblars and also failed to reach the Mournfang.

I did have a contingency plan in place as I had set up a single Troll (which had only 1 wound left as result of the Leadbelchers) as a speed bump in front of his Irongut unit, which was also a bunker for his Slaughtermaster and Bruiser BSB.

The Squig Herd also charge the big unit of Ogre Bulls, While doing some serious damage to the Bulls, they did their own smacking their own. I did lose combat so the Squigs exploded. Unfortunately, I rolled high enough that the single Troll parked in front of the Ironguts would be hit. With only one wound left, I was hoping I could roll low for the amount of hits...

Nope. 4 wounds and couldn't save any with the regen.

That left the Ironguts with a free rear charge onto the Black Orcs. *Sigh* It happens...

A few pics later, the Mournfang Cav routed, but I couldn't catch them. It actually took me all game long to get the points for them. I made a simple mistake of not Making Way with Bruticus to smack the last Mournfang Cav model into submission. In my defense, I thought Razghull and a few of his mates would seal the deal, but apparently not.

Da Stone Choppaz (Savage Orcs) failed their animosity test and had to charge the Ironguts. Some careful dice management and some good dice rolls (and some bad dice from Richard) in the magic phase allowed me to cast every spell on my Turn. That pretty much sealed the fate of the Ironguts. I killed the Bruiser outright and whittled down the Ironguts. The Slaughtermaster had the Crown of Command, so it wasn't going to be easy. But with the BSB gone, one bad roll on a Break Test was all I needed to finally get rid of the Slaughtermaster.

Da Stone Choppaz ran into the flank of the Leadbelchers, then got counter charged by the Bulls on the flank. While I lasted 2 turns, Da Stone Choppaz could only take so much beating and eventually broke.

At this point, Richard was up on points until I finally killed off the last Mournfang. Killing Mournfangs are not an easy task and would actually be really scared if I had to face 2 or 3 units of them.

I must say it was a tight battle. Plenty of dead models from both sides. In the end, the difference was only 196 points. A minor victory to Razghull, which would've given me an 11-9 win based on DogCon's scoring system.

Looking forward to the next game...

On a High...

So my most recent purchase came in the form of a High Elf army from eBay arrived in the post this morning. Pretty stoked that I got 40x spearmen, 40x Archers, 20x White Lions, 2 Bolt Throwers and 2x Chariots in the set. Originally, the set included 20x Phoenix Guard, but you could substitute them for either 20x Swordmasters or 20x White Lions. I already have 20x Phoenix Guard and I've got enough Swordmasters and for the ridiculous price of $68 for 10 White Lions, I asked that the Phoenix Guard get subbed for White Lions.

I open the package and to my dismay, I don't see White Lions. I see Phoenix Guard.

Ughh.

So I emailed the seller and asked what the process is for an exchange.

I will have to wait until tomorrow morning for a response, but as I was going through the rest of the package when a thought occurred to me. What if I ran a unit of 40x Phoenix Guard? It would definitely be the ultimate bunker/points denial unit in the High Elf army. 4+ Ward save FTW. So now I'm thinking of a list that would include 40x Spearmen, 40x Phoenix Guard with Banner of Sorcery, 2 units of 10 Swordmasters and a couple of units of Archers as the backbone of the infantry...

Anyway, some WiP pictures of Wurzzag. I didn't take any pics of the Night Goblins as the undercoat was still wet at the time...

Dungeon cleaning...

Well, it's no wonder why I can't get any specific projects done.

I keep changing my mind.

Don't you just hate that? Luckily for me, I have this blog to help me stay on track with my current projects.

Oh, who am I kidding?

Stay on track, Eric. I know you can do it.

Ughh.

I decided to clean my "Dungeon" (the room where I paint and keep all my models in). There was quite a few stuff to throw out. Even managed to find my old collection of Neopet cards. It was awhile back when I used to play for fun against my sisters. Yeah, I know. I can't believe it either.

Amongst some of the junk were some old 40k models, which I just decided to throw out. I never liked 40k and have no intention of playing it in the future.

Upon further rummaging, I found a brand new box of Night Goblins still in its seal. I was feeling stoked. So before I even got a chance to finish cleaning, I found myself assembling the little fellas.

After deciding to make some unit fillers once again, I thought I'd rummage some more, in case I find something useful. Lo and behold I found some cork which had gone MIA ages ago. I love finding stuff when I'm cleaning my room. What are the chances of me finding some money during my clean up?...

I used a bit of the Plastic Green stuff for a bit of rendering on the cork.

Not satisfied with just the one unit filler, I decided to rummage some more. I found a plastic Fanatics sprue laying around and decided to use some parts from that.

Let's see if I can get these painted by the end of the week...

Wish me luck and hope I don't find anything else while cleaning up...

DW Club Challenge

The inaugural Club challenge for Dystopian Wars was let loose on Sunday, December 4. It was a great turn out with 14 players dropping by to get a game of boats and planes.

It's been awhile since I last played DW, so the rules were slowly slipping away from my head. A lot of the guys down at the club are also fairly new to the game, so we were learning things on the go.

Unfortunately, I didn't get any pics in as I was playing and running the Club Challenge at the same time.

Game 1 was against Chris and his Covenant of Antarctica. The CoA are a very solid nation, especially with their shields that always seem to knock off gunnery attacks on a frequent basis. My tactics were all wrong in this game, concentrating my Squids on his Dreadnought when I should've been going for his 3 cruisers which were left all alone.

I did manage to get my 2 Squids into his Dreadnought eventually, wiping out the crew. But when I tried to board the vessel with one of my battle ships, my crew were shot to bits with so many machine guns still being manned onboard. Ended up being a convincing win to Chris.

Game 2 set me up against the Cam and the Kingdom of Brittania. Another Dreadnought. Knowing that the Dreadnought had 6 turrets, not only is it a tank, but it will blow anything away if it gets too close.

So with that in mind, I focused one battle ship on his subs, while the 2 Squids and the other battleship would go for his own battle ship.

My tactics were a lot more solid in this game, severely wounding his battleship, knocking off one of Cam's subs and denying the Dreadnought a path to my fleet by setting down carefully placed mines.

I eventually boarded his battle ship on the last turn to claim it as a prize - which means I double the points when calculating victory points. Big win to me.

Catching up with D-Dub...

The amount of Dystopian Wars players at the club has really sky rocketed within the last few months. The rules are quite good and the system is pretty well balanced. I'm really liking DW so far.

I've played 16 games so far with my EoTBS fleet and so far I've notched 10 wins and 6 losses. I'm not too concerned with my starting record as there are a few rules that we've missed out on - especially during the early days, when we were just putting models on the table and rolling dice.

Here are a couple of videos of Fredy and myself duking it out at the club, practicing with our 800 point fleets for the upcoming Club Challenge.

I've painted up all of the units I'm going to use on the day, hoping I can take out best painted (which will be voted by Mike, the shop owner). But I'm concerned that I might not even play. Some players might drop out, some might not even turn up at all. Even if I get one game in, I'll be cheerin'.

I've got a couple more games lined up tonight, first game will be against Ross, while game 2 will depend on the others and what time their games finish.

Holiday mode...

The last few months have been crazy. While the gaming side of things have been healthy, painting and assembling models were a rare occurrence.

Warmachine games down at the club have died down. I can think of 2 regular players who come down on Sunday mornings, but apart from that, no one else seems to be keen.

Warhammer Fantasy has really been kicking off in the past few months. This is certainly helped by the Club Challenge that I have been running on a monthly basis. The number of participants has slowly risen month by month and our club membership seems to be climbing too. The Club Challenge season for 2011 has officially ended - I placed 3rd overall amongst a great field of players.

This upcoming Sunday - December 4 - I'll be hosting the inaugural Dystopian Wars Club Challenge at Unlimited Hobbies. 2 games at 800 points each. We weren't too worried about composition, so we just stuck with the basic composition as per the rulebook. I've designed a couple of basic missions, so it should be interesting how it goes being the first Club Challenge. I look forward to getting some feedback from players about how things could be done for next year.

I'm officially on holidays as of today, so I have earmarked some painting painting projects to do over the next few weeks.

In terms of assembly, I want to finish off the High Elf army which I have purchased from the U.S. recently. So far, I've put together 20x Phoenix Guard and the Swordmasters, Seaguard and Ellyrian Reavers from the Island of Blood set. I still have a box of Dragon Princes waiting to get assembled, but I wasn't too keen on using them in my 2500 point list.

As for the painting side, I want to finish off my Dystopian Wars minis. For the EoTBS, I have a Dreadnaught, Sky Fortress and a few Destroyers to go. Also a KoB starter box is waiting to get some treatment by the paint brushes. I also want to finish off more Empire Swordsmen, in the hope that a new Empire armybook will be released next year.

That's all I have for now, I will post some pics in the near future including all the WiP projects and the DW Club Challenge this Sunday.
